Case of the Wrong Label

Gestational Carrier

Reclassified and Cleared

A 24-year-old woman looking to be a gestational carrier for an intended couple was repeatedly disqualified from consideration due to her medical records indicating a past history of ITP. After meeting with the Ouma team at the request of the infertility physician and thorough review of records, it was determined that the ITP diagnosis was entered as a result of a medical error and that she did not in fact have this diagnosis.

Confirmatory blood work confirmed this, and reassurance was provided to her, the intended parents, and the fertility clinic.

Outcome

She was cleared from an MFM standpoint to proceed with being a gestational carrier and helping the couple with their family-building journey.

1

Identified Misdiagnosis

Thorough review of medical records revealed the ITP diagnosis was entered in error.

2

Commissioned Bloodwork

Confirmatory lab work was ordered to validate the finding.

3

Confirmed Correct Diagnosis

Results confirmed the patient did not have ITP, resolving the disqualification.

4

Gave Clearance

Patient was cleared to proceed as a gestational carrier, reuniting the intended couple with their path to parenthood.
